Los Angeles [US], April 21 (ANI): Actor Ryan Reynolds has hinted at a new direction for the Deadpool franchise, revealing that the iconic anti-hero may no longer headline future films, according to People.
Asked about the future of the character, Reynolds said, 'I have some stuff kind of written,' but added, 'I don't think I'm going to center him again. I think he's a supporting character.'
The actor, who has led the franchise since 2016, explained that Deadpool works best in ensemble settings. 'He's a guy that's great in a group,' he said.
Reynolds last appeared as Deadpool in Deadpool & Wolverine (2024), alongside Hugh Jackman, marking the character's entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The film went on to become the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time.
Despite ongoing speculation about Deadpool's future in Marvel projects, Reynolds clarified that no such involvement has been confirmed. He had earlier said he hasn't 'stepped foot on set' for any upcoming films, according to People.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter in December 2024, Reynolds said he doesn't think the character Deadpool should ever become a member of the X-Men or Avengers. 'He always needs to stay an outsider,' he explained at the time.
Sharing his perspective on the character's trajectory, Reynolds noted that Deadpool should remain an outsider. 'His coping mechanism of deflecting shame through humor works only when used to pave over his many inadequacies,' he said, adding, 'If and when he does become an Avenger or X-Man, we're at the end of his journey,' according to People.
Meanwhile, Reynolds has a slate of upcoming projects, including Mayday (set to release on Apple TV on September 4), Animal Friends (in theatres January 22, 2027), and an adaptation of Eloise. (ANI)
