Growing eastern California wildfire compels evacuations, Cal Fire says

A fast-growing wildfire in California’s Eastern Sierra region has burned 1,000 acres and forced people to leave their homes in several areas, officials said on March 30
The fire, called the Silver Fire, started around 2:11 p.m. near Highway 6 and Silver Canyon Road in Inyo County
Evacuation orders were given for several places, including Laws in Inyo County, Chalfant in Mono County, and the White Mountain Estates neighborhood

BISHOP, California: A fast-growing wildfire in California's Eastern Sierra region has burned 1,000 acres and forced people to leave their homes in several areas, officials said on March 30.

The fire, called the Silver Fire, started around 2:11 p.m. near Highway 6 and Silver Canyon Road in Inyo County. Firefighters have not yet been able to contain any part of it.

Evacuation orders were given for several places, including Laws in Inyo County, Chalfant in Mono County, and the White Mountain Estates neighborhood. A 30-mile section of U.S. Highway 6 was also closed.

So far, no one has been hurt, and no buildings have been damaged. The cause of the fire is still being investigated.

Over 200 firefighters are working to control the fire, but strong winds reaching 35 miles per hour at Bishop Airport have prevented some firefighting planes from flying, making the job more challenging.

Weather experts warned that winds in the area could reach up to 65 mph.

Earlier this year, Los Angeles experienced its worst wildfires ever, killing 28 people and destroying over 16,000 buildings.
